WHO WE ARE
Black Thumb Farm is a nonprofit urban farm and gathering space dedicated to empowering BIPOC youth and community through land based programming, growing culturally sustaining foods and flowers, and providing healing access to vital green space for the San Fernando Valley. We center BIPOC voices and experiences in our pursuit of land, seed, and food sovereignty. We work to be in right relation with Indigenous peoples as visitors on unceded Tataviam, Tongva, and Chumash lands.

WHAT WE DO
OVER 500+ YOUTH SERVED
BIPOC communities are often the hardest hit when it comes to food access, especially in the San Fernando Valley and greater L.A. areas. Our purpose is to empower BIPOC youth in these areas to take back their health and advocate for food sovereignty on behalf of their community.
We envision a deeply interconnected world where our youth and communities exercise communal sovereignty over land, seed, and food systems, and live with dignity, beauty, and joy.
1200LB+ OF PRODUCE DONATED
85% of the crops we grow are culturally relevant to our youth and their families. During our programming year, all of the food grown on the farm is harvested and taken home by our program participants.
WHY WE DO IT
FOOD, LAND AND SEED SOVEREIGNTY
We are committed to this work to fight against social injustice, including racism, misogyny, anti-Blackness, food apartheid, and other systems of oppression, especially in the context of climate change. Sustainability is a field that is rapidly becoming gentrified and exclusive, despite the fact that the climate crisis impacts BIPOC communities more than their white counterparts. We aim to educate our communities on these issues while highlighting the immense efforts being made by many, all while uplifting our heritage and ancestral practices that have continue to sustain healthy ecosystems and communities.

Open Farm Days
Open Farm Days are free volunteer events for community members of all ages who'd love some hands-on experience. Some activities include painting signs for the garden, sifting & packing seeds, creating organic and natural fertilizer, and many other engaging farm tasks.
Join us to help with farm tasks, learn practical garden tips, connect with other community members, and help us prepare for our move to our new farm
Whatley Shares
We’re bringing you 6 weeks of farm-fresh produce and flowers, from July 4th through August 8th. We employ local youth to support harvesting and weekly Saturday pick-up on the farm! Each Saturday, members pick up their weekly share of local, organic, seasonal produce or a fresh flower bouquet directly from our farm.
Currently our flower shares are available and our produce shares are sold out.
